COMMON WATER HEATER PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

KNOCKING SOUNDS – Knocking sounds coming from your water heater usually means there is sediment in the bottom of the tank. From a maintenance perspective, this doesn’t usually mean anything. In most cases, a plumber is not needed for knocking sounds but it always depends on the age of the water heater.

STANDING WATER IN THE UNIT – If you see standing water in/near your unit or through the inspection door (on a gas water heater), you want to shut off the water going to the water heater and call a plumber. There’s an isolation valve on the top right-hand side of the water heater, near where the water comes into the water heater. Turn this off and call your plumber.

ISSUES WITH WATER TEMPERATURE – The good news is, this doesn’t mean you need a new water heater. Depending on whether you have a gas water heater or an electric one, this could be a few different issues. In either case, it can usually be repaired at a fair price and allow you to avoid the cost of replacing your water heater.

WATER LEAKS – This may not be bad news. But you should still shut off the water and call AZ Family Plumbing immediately. Remember we offer 24/7 emergency plumbing services to all of the Phoenix metro area.

SHUTTING OFF – If you have an electric water heater, this is likely a heating element malfunction or a thermostat that needs replacement. If you have a gas water heater, it could be a gas valve that needs to be repaired or replaced. In either case, this can usually be repaired without the cost of replacing your water heater.

RUNNING CONSTANTLY – If you notice that your water heater is running constantly, unfortunately, this is usually indicative of a slab leak underneath your house. Call AZ Family Plumbing ASAP.

HIGH ENERGY BILLS CAUSED BY AN INEFFICIENT HEATER – This too could be indicative of a slab leak underneath your house. Call your plumber ASAP. Another alternative could be that you just need to switch to tankless water. In either case, AZ Family Plumbing can help.

GAS LEAKS – If you smell a rotten egg/sulfur smell coming from your gas water heater, call AZ Family Plumbing immediately. We offer 24/7 emergency plumbing services.

All products that come from the big box home improvement stores are “B” grade product that does not last as long as a contractor-grade water heater from a plumbing supply store. For example, a brand bought from the big box store called Rheem is made in Mexico and is assembled with cheaper parts and materials, as opposed to the brands we use, Ruud, which is made in the U.S.A. and assembled with high-quality materials that last longer.
  • How long does it take to replace a water heater?
A professional plumber will only take about 2-4 hours. A homeowner doing it on their own could take 1-2 days.

Absolutely. Besides the endless hot water you get with a tankless water heater, owning a tankless water heater, it will pay for itself from the reduction of energy costs. A tank water heater will never recoup the cost that was initially spent. Tankless water heaters only consume energy when in use.

Jason was able to get to me the same day I made a call in about my water heater going out. Saved my weekend since I had guests coming in the next day. He is honest and transparent about his work and prices. Does things the right way!! Definitely using again and will recommend to anyone in need of a solid plumber.

Proficient, Efficient, Professional. We had a great experience with this company. They arrived for a problem with the toilet, and stayed to replace our water heater (which had broken that day). What a relief to find a company that responds quickly and stays to make sure the job is done right.

CHRISTINA A.

I had a piece on my gas water heater fail. After my usual company not getting back to me I reached out to AZ Family Plumbing Co and they were able to fit me in the same day. Very happy with the service and the price!
